The Meeting at Daxi
On December 12, 1936, Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng, who were responsible
for exterminating Communist forces in the northwest, conspired to raid the Nationalist
encampment at Huaqingchi in Lintong, and kidnap Generalissimo JiangJie-shi, the
national leader of armed forces.. Among the eight demands they made for Jiang’s
release was that he should cease the civil war and work with the Chinese Communists
to fight against the Japanese.
The Xian Incident, as it was known, came as a shock to many both domestically and
internationally. This event reversed the confrontational posture of the Nationalists
and Communists. It also changed the father-son-like relationship that Jiang and
Zhang once enjoyed, resulting in Zhang’s tragic fate of living under house arrest
at various locations for the next half century..Twenty-one years later, on November
23, 1958, JiangJie-shi and Zhang Xueliang had a secret meeting at Daxi Presidential
Retreat, arranged and accompanied by JiangJing-guo. The conversation began with
Zhang saying, “President Jiang, you are old.” and Jiang retorting, “Xueliang, you’ve
also gone bald.”The contents of this display allow visitors to glimpse at Zhang’s
life and seclusion after the Xian Incident, the story of true love between him and
Zhao Yidi after he was moved to Taiwan under house arrest, and the picture of him
and the two Jiangs in their meeting at Daxi, making the dust-covered annals of history
come to life.
Life at Xikou
JiangJingguo was born in the town of Xikou in Fenghua, Zhejiang Province. Raised
by his grandmother Wang Caiyu and mother Mao Fumei,he left his hometown at the age
of 12, arriving in Shanghai to become a student at Wanzhu Elementary School. He
later traveled even further for his studies, going to the Soviet Union and living
there for 12 years. Not until he was 28 did he return to China with his Russian
wife Faina Vakhreva and their son, Jiang Xiaowen. Following the wishes of his father,
JiangJie-shi, JiangJing-guo and his family settled in Xikou, where he studied the
Classics and writings of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, living a life of leisure spanning eight
months. Many photographs were taken from this period, such as home tutoring, the
visit of relatives, the Chinese-style marriage ceremony with his wife, the funeral
of Jiang’s mother, and family sacrifices performed at the clan home. Let us now
look at the photographs and mementos on display and together witness part of JiangJing-guo’s
life at Xikou.
Love Story in a Northern Land
In October of 1925, as the Kuomintang Nationalists put into practice a policy of
cooperation with the Soviet Union and Communists, JiangJing-guo in his revolutionary
spirit was encouraged by Wu Zhihui, and recommended by the Soviet advisor Mikhail
Borodin and left for Moscow to study at Sun Yat-sen University. Not long thereafter,
cooperation with the Communists collapsed, and Jiangbecame a victim of intrigue,
a pawn used by the Soviet authorities as he ended up living in hardship. It was
during this period that he met a 17-year-old girl working at a factory in the Ural
Mountains area. Jiangfell in love with Faina Vakhreva, also known in Chinese as
Jiang Fangliang, the two pursuing a cross-cultural relationship resulting in their
marriage in March of 1935.JiangJing-guo and family returned to China in April of
1937, and then traveled to Taiwan in 1949 with the retreat of the Nationalist government.
Jiang Fangliang quickly adopted the cultural traditions of her husband’s homeland,
becoming a supporting wife and caring mother, remaining faithfully devoted to her
husband over the years. This display includes photographs of JiangJing-guo in the
Soviet Union along with the young and beautiful Jiang Fangliang and the wedding
photo of the two. Their conjugal bliss is testimony to this love story in a northern
land.
Building the Homeland
Four months after the conclusion of the Xian Incident, Jiang Jingguo returned to
his homeland. Consenting to his father’s wishes, he returned to his hometown of
Xikou for studies. Eight months later, he was sent to Jiangxi to take up an official
post, thus inaugurating his career in politics. After the War, he assisted in facilitating
Sino-Soviet relations and undertook such arduous tasks as overhauling the financial
and economic sectors, devoting himself to rebuilding his homeland.
JiangJing-guo moved with the Nationalist government to Taiwan in 1949 and assumed
a variety of government posts over the years. Out of his concern for Taiwan’s safety
and development, he once said, “Wherever there is danger, that’s where I go.” Likewise,
his determination was revealed in his comment, “If we don’t do it today, we’ll regret
it tomorrow.” |
